These video games have combat methods that are different from the norm, which makes them seem strange.
One thing that always happens in video games is fighting. Fighting enemies is an important part of most games, whether they are close or far away. There have been many games with a combat theme, and many of them have systems that are very similar to one another. On the other hand, there are many cases.
While there are a few games with truly unique combat systems, there are a lot that are just plain weird. This could mean that the game controls are a little different from other games or that the way it looks is different in a way that makes you wonder. In any case, some games have unique combat mechanics that make them stand out from the crowd.
Kirby’s Dream Buffet
It’s not just Kirby games that have had interesting spin-offs. Krisper’s Dream Buffet is a party game that is one of many games in the series that you can play on Switch. Kirby has been shrunk down in this game, and he has to compete with other Kirbys to eat as much food as they can over four courses.
While racing is the main form of competition in Kirby’s Dream Buffet, each event concludes with a combat zone where all players must engage in combat while also consuming more food. The players in this combat are mostly rolling into each other to knock each other off using food-based power-ups, which is strange.
Undertale
One of the most creative ways to make new combat methods is in role-playing games. Undertale was influenced by other games, but it had its own combat system that decided the whole story of the player character.
As a player moves through Undertale, they have a clear choice: they can either kill an enemy like usual, or they can talk things out with them. When trying to kill an enemy directly, timing is very important. But the pacifist route gives players new dialogue choices while still trying to avoid attacks in a “bullet hell” style game.
Everhood
It’s not always the case that rhythm games have combat, but there have been some great examples of the genre trying out this premise. One game that does this is Everhood, whose main fighting area is made up of five columns of musical notes.
Players take on the role of Red, a wooden doll who is looking for a lost arm. Along the way, she meets other characters and is forced to fight them. From the enemy, light fragments move in these five groups and attack. The main goal is to avoid these fragments. About halfway through the game, a new feature is added that lets Red use these pieces as weapons.
Gang Beasts
Adding strange ragdoll avatars to a strange combat system is a good way to make it more interesting. The idea behind Gang Beasts is that friends fight each other in matches where only one person is left standing at the end of each round. The person who has the most wins at the end is the winner.
Gang Beasts looks like a simple fighting game where players just throw punches at each other. The combat system is strange, though, because players can move each arm separately. This makes for interesting gameplay where you don’t just press one button to attack.
Rollerdrome
While Rollerdrome‘s combat isn’t something we usually see in games, it’s still cool to watch as well as play. The story of the game is based on an event that will happen soon and puts Roller Derby players’ lives at risk in a combat sport.
Rollerdrome is a game where players have to think quickly to get around, do tricks, and kill any targets they can lock on to. Players don’t have to worry about losing when they try to land, though. With all of their guns, all they have to do is kill everyone in the field.
Arms
Some of the biggest games the company has ever made came out in 2017, the same year the Nintendo Switch came out. Nintendo made one of the few new IPs this generation, which was part of the 2017 list. The fighting game Arms is all about the players’ long arms.
In the 3D battle, up to four people can go head-to-head in matches where they stretch out their arms to hit the other person. The attachments on these arms are different and can do different amounts of damage. You can switch them out between games. In Arms, there are 15 fighters and many game types that aren’t just fighting.
Your Only Move Is Hustle
Your Only Move Is Hustle looks like a normal 2D fighting game at first glance, but it’s actually a very different kind of fighting game. The battles are turn-based, so Penalty Kick Online players can prepare their character for every move they make before they actually do it.
Within the menu, there are many choices that let players decide what kind of move their stick figure will make next. It has a list of strikes, special moves, dodges, and defenses. As the games are played, almost any match can turn into a movie-style fight scene.
Paper Mario: The Origami King
When the Paper Mario series first started, it was known for its great, easy turn-based combat sequences. But now that the series is going in a more creative direction, the combat options have become more complicated. Paper Mario: The Origami King is the most current game like this.
The Origami King adds ring-based battles that are more of a puzzle than an action scene. Players must rotate the rings to line up all the enemies correctly so Mario can attack. People who play boss fights have to figure out a way for Mario to get to the boss in the middle of the stage.
Fight Crab
What a cool idea it would be to be a crab with a gun! In the 3D action game Fight Crab, different types of crustaceans fight each other in an arena war based on physics. To win a fight, players must be able to flip over the other team’s crab.
People will have anything from a knife to a gun to help them do this. No matter what weapon the player picks, they will need to learn how to handle the crab and all of its parts in order to charge at the other player. Along with this, there are also cute settings, like cage fights under the sea or being kaiju in the city.
Toribash
Even though it came out in 2006, Toribash still has a lively community. It was one of the first games to use strange combat mechanics. It’s very famous because players control things that look like people and can change every part of their bodies.
During fight, players change different parts of their character to make them move in a certain way. The other player will do the same thing until both of them give up. This makes for a funny moment when the characters stumble for a moment in a certain way. But getting good at this can be very satisfying, especially if you can practice with different styles.
