For consumers, exclusivity is one of the most annoying things about the gaming business. People who own a PlayStation may feel left out because they can’t play games from well-known series like The Legend of Zelda, Gears of War, and Super Mario. The sci-fi first-person shooter Halo is another game that the blue brand has not been able to get. These games, led by Master Chief, have been important to the first-person shooter (FPS) genre since Halo: Combat Evolved came out in 2001.
Thank goodness Sony has made a lot of great shooters over the years that can fill the gap left by the Halo series’ monopoly. Many of the games on this list aren’t worth playing, so it won’t just look at the ones that are most like Halo. Instead, this list will look at games that are similar to the Halo series but are still great games in their own right, with their own features and ways of playing.
Rage 2
It surprised a lot of people when Rage 2 was announced, because the first game was a good open-world shooter, but it didn’t really stand out or gain many long-term fans.
Still, id Software and Bethesda chose to bring the series back to life, and Rage 2 will come out in May 2019. The first Rage game was mostly realistic and serious, but Rage 2 tries to add a lot of charm to the series. This is clear just by looking at the front covers of the two games: Rage 2’s is full of bright colors, while Rage 1’s is dull and black.
Titanfall 2
When it came out in October 2016, Titanfall 2 wasn’t exactly a huge hit in terms of sales. Most likely, this was because Electronic Arts put out the game just one week after Battlefield 1, another one of their first-person shooters.Electronic Arts didn’t think it was a problem that the two games came out one week apart because they thought the two groups of people would enjoy them differently.
Even though Titanfall 2 got off to a slow start, it now has a huge number of players thanks to word of mouth about how good it is. On top of that, like its predecessor, this game stands out for having both fast-paced action on foot and mech-style battle when controlling a Titan.
DOOM Eternal
DOOM, which is arguably the most important first-person shooter series of all time, got a new start in 2016. It wasn’t a surprise when Bethesda told id Software to make a follow up called DOOM Eternal. Since the first game did well with both critics and customers.
PlayStation owners may not be able to get any more DOOM games on the blue brand now that Microsoft bought Zenimax Media, the company that owns Bethesda. DOOM Eternal and DOOM (2016) should be more than enough to keep series fans busy, though.
Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus
The Wolfenstein series gets credit. Even though the DOOM franchise had a bigger impact on the first-person shooter genre as a whole. This is because id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D used many of the same ideas in their groundbreaking 1993 game DOOM.
The Wolfenstein series is still going strong, just like DOOM. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus by MachineGames has a fast-paced action style like DOOM Eternal. But the bad guys are Nazis instead of demons.
Destiny 2
Since Bungie made Destiny 2, it makes sense that it would be on this list. The original Halo series, along with Halo 3: ODST and Halo Reach, were all made by Bungie. Today, Geometry Dash World is one of the most popular free-to-play games. The online shooter has had a huge fan base since it first came out in 2017. Mostly because of the regular updates that add new material and keep players busy.
Many gamers around the world were shocked when, at the beginning of 2022. Sony revealed that it was buying Bungie, the company that made Halo. Consequently, PlayStation may soon receive a fresh IP that looks like the Halo games.
Prey
The first Prey game, which came out in 2006 from 2K Games and was a huge commercial hit, was supposed to come out soon after. But Prey 2 got stuck in development hell and wasn’t made at all in 2014. Thank goodness for Prey fans, the cancellation of Prey 2 didn’t mean the end of the series. In 2017, the IP was brought back to life.
Arkane Studios’ Prey was a huge project that mixed many types of games into one. Including first-person shooters, role-playing games, spy games, and an open world. Just for the beginning, the game is fun to play. Because it grabs players right away and makes the experience unique.
Apex Legends
Respawn Entertainment made Apex Legends, which is easily one of the best battle royale games in the short history of the genre. As a result of being made by the same company that made Titanfall 2. The games feel similar in how fast-paced they are.
Since it came out in 2019, Apex Legends has won a lot of awards. Such as Online Game of the Year at the 23rd Annual D.I.C.E. Awards and Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards 2019.
Borderlands 3
The Borderlands series and Ubisoft’s Far Cry games have become important parts of the open-world first-person shooter market. The games are famous for their loot system and unique art style. Which was a change that was made very late in the development of the first game.
Borderlands 3 didn’t get great reviews when it came out. On Metacritic, it got scores of 78 to 82 across all three versions. The game was recently re-released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Though, and got an amazing Metascore of 91 on PS5. This is because it’s much better than the original.
