KEDARKANTHA YATRA

The Ultimate Guide for Kedarnath Yatra

INTRODUCTION:

Kedarnath is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is part of the sacred Char Dham pilgrimage and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated at an altitude of 3,583 m near the Mandakini river. The majestic sights of snow-capped Himalayan peaks surrounding the temple add to its beauty. Kedarnath temple is believed to be over a thousand years old and is built in stone. During winter the temple closes as the region experiences heavy snowfall.

Planning and Preparation

Since Kedarnath is located in a remote hilly region, proper planning and preparation are needed before embarking on the pilgrimage. It is best to go in a group or with a guide who is familiar with the terrain and route. Here are some key tips for planning your Kedarnath yatra:

– Book your accommodation in advance at Gaurikund which is the base for the trek. There are hotels and lodges available according to your budget.

– Pack light and carry only essentials in a backpack as you need to trek 14 km uphill from Gaurikund. Carry warm and waterproof woolen clothing, walking stick, first aid kit, torchlight etc.

– Start your fitness preparation at least 2-3 months in advance by walking or jogging daily. Cardiovascular exercises build endurance for the steep uphill trek. Yoga helps improve muscle flexibility.

– Get a medical check-up done and consult your doctor before the trek if you have any medical conditions or concerns. Taking Diamox can help prevent altitude sickness.

– Avoid travelling in monsoons from July-August as roads are prone to landslides and the route becomes very risky. September-October is ideal after the monsoon ends.

-Hire an expert or a guide to help you throughout. A guide will ensure your safety during the trek and porters can carry your luggage.

– Check weather forecasts regularly before leaving for the yatra. Carry adequate warm clothing as temperatures can drop sharply.

The Yatra Route

The traditional route for Kedarnath yatra starts from Rishikesh. The route goes via Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gaurikund and Kedarnath covering a distance of about 250 km. The closest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun about 240 km away.

Here is how the route unfolds:

Rishikesh – This is where the pilgrimage starts. Take a dip in the holy Ganges river and seek blessings at the ancient temples before beginning the trek.

Devprayag – This is the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers that merges to form the Ganges.

Srinagar – The largest city on the banks of Alaknanda river with ancient temples like Kamleshwar Mahadev.

Rudrapryag – Where Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers meet is Rudrapryag. The Rudranath temple is about Lord Shiva.

Gaurikund – Base for Kedarnath trek. Take a dip in hot springs to relax muscles before the steep 14 km uphill trek.

Kedarnath Temple – One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in the country. Darshan of the majestic temple and its architecture is the highlight.

The 14 km uphill trek from Gaurikund starts through a winding path along the Mandakini river. The initial 3-4 km involve steep climbing with scattered shops selling snacks and drinks. Horses and palanquins are available to assist pilgrims. The next 10 km is moderate climb and the trail is paved with rocks steps. The last part again steepens as you reach Rambara, just 7 km before Kedarnath. From Rambara, the splendid views of snow-capped Kedarnath peak can be seen. The final ascent from Rambara to the temple complex needs to be done slowly to avoid altitude sickness. Ponies can take you right till the temple steps.

At The Temple

After the arduous trek, darshan of the majestic Kedarnath temple and its deity is an emotional and spiritual experience. The ancient stone facade, carved pillars and statues are marvels of ancient architecture. Pilgrims get a few seconds in the inner garbha griha to pray and make offerings. Chanting Shiva mantras in the spiritual aura of the temple has a powerful effect. The Adi Shankaracharya samadhi behind the temple is also visited by pilgrims. Light puja and havan take place in the temple complex morning and evening. Accommodation is available in dharamshalas and ashrams nearby for overnight stay before returning via the 14 km downhill trek.

The Kedarnath yatra presents a profoundly uplifting pilgrimage in the lap of nature combining physical activity, ancient heritage and divine blessings. With robust planning and preparedness, the trek can be completed by most people. Completing the yatra leaves one spiritually energized and with a sense of accomplishment.
